Working from home? 5 top tips!
Working from home is no longer associated with trendy startups or best selling authors. It’s now become a widespread reality. Here are five top productivity tips from the guys who know: Click4Assistance, the best live chat website software in the UK!
Get an early start
While it might be tempting to stay in bed for another hour like you would on a day off, it’s important to start your day early, with purpose. This instantly puts your mind and body into work mode, not lazy mode, and allows you to be more productive throughout the day. An early start will also mean that you’re getting stuff done earlier, giving you a little more time to relax later in the day, or have a better paced work day, reducing stress.
Claim a spot as a dedicated work space
The sofa in your living room is not designed for working, it’s designed for exactly the opposite, so you’ll find that working on the sofa for a few hours is okay, but for an eight hour work day after a few weeks, you’ll find yourself becoming more unproductive. Making sure that you have a desk with a chair that you can associate with work will make you much more productive, and it’s much better long term for your health, physical and mental.
Structure your day
As you would in the office, structure your day. If you need some visual stimulation, create a “routine” calendar and break your work day down into repeating events. Use 60-90 minute time blocks to keep you in the zone long enough to get things done, but not so long that you’re exhausted. This will help you stick to a routine rather than get lost window shopping on Amazon or scrolling though social media….
Speaking of social media…
Make it harder to use social media at home during working hours. Try to respect your productive hours so that they don’t end up bleeding into your “relaxing” time, else you’ll be spending a lot of your personal time playing catch up. By creating healthy boundaries, you will be much more productive, less stressed and well rested.
Work when you're most productive
Granted, there are some roles that just don’t allow it, but if you’re a night owl and not a lark, don’t force yourself to get that big project started at 9am when your brain is still non-functional. Likewise, if you’re a lark and highly productive first thing, then make sure that your day is spent working during your productivity sweet spots rather than the afternoon when you’ve run out of steam. It’s always best to speak with your manager and run a couple trials to show your improvement, which will be much more encouraging for this method to become a more permanent fixture later on.
Bonus tip: Meal prep the night before
Yes, you know that thing you used to do every night before bed so you could save time in the morning? Meal prepping, yes that thing! It saves so much time to meal prep when you’re working from home, since you don’t spend time faffing about in the kitchen trying to decide what to cook.
