What countries use ChatGPT the most?
Some countries use ChatGPT far more than others, but why? Discover the answer here.
ChatGPT took the world by storm when it came out in November 2022. But, interestingly, the technology’s impact wasn’t equal across the planet. Some countries ended up using it more than others according to the CCI Global Consumer Sentiment Survey 2023.
Furthermore, many of the top users weren't from the advanced economies, as you might expect. Instead, countries with younger populations seem to be the ones leveraging ChatGPT the most.
The following is a list of countries by ChatGPT use, in descending order:
India – 45%
In India, a whopping 45% of surveyed people said they used ChatGPT (more than 7% higher than the second-place country). But for many, this statistic won’t be a surprise; after all, the subcontinent is an emerging tech hub with countless digital marketing and creative agencies.
For this reason, India’s high use of ChatGPT comes primarily out of necessity. The country’s citizens rely on the tool for accessing information affordably. Businesses need it for customer support and content creation at low cost while the educational sector relies on it for cheap pedagogy.
Moreover, India is more excited about modern technology than most countries. It has a long history of information sharing, and views software, like ChatGPT, as that tradition on steroids.
Morocco – 38%
Coming in at number two on the CCI Global’s list is Morocco, where 38% of respondents say they use ChatGPT. Usage is high in the country because of the government’s effort to digitise the economy. The authorities want citizens using powerful AI tools for education, business and productivity. ChatGPT also helps Moroccans convert between their native languages, French, Berber, and Arabic, and international ones, like English and Spanish. As such, the tool is helpful for tourism businesses wanting to create content for their websites and legal professionals looking for accurate document translation.
And, lastly, just like Indians, Moroccans are an inquisitive bunch. Natives love exploring new technologies, and ChatGPT is one of the most exciting to come along in years.
UAE – 34%
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) also scores highly in CCI Global’s Survey, with an impressive 34% of people admitting they use the technology. This high usage comes chiefly from the country’s tech-savvy environment. The state is over a decade into its digital transformation and encourages innovators to adopt foreign technologies and incorporate them in their business models wherever they can.
The extent of ChatGPT’s business usage in the UAE is tremendous. Startups and multinational corporations in the territory often use it for content creation and customer support to take advantage of the UAE’s friendly tax advantages. Students also enjoy it because of the country’s openness to learning and research.
Argentina – 32%
Argentina scores strongly (as do other South American countries like Brazil) for ChatGPT penetration. Figures show usage is 32%, significantly higher than most places in Western Europe and North America.
Economic conditions are the primary reason for Argentina’s ChatGPT obsession. The fact it is a free (or almost free) resource is welcome relief for citizens marred by years of hyperinflation and sluggish GDP growth.
However, Argentina also has a highly educated population compared to most countries in its income bracket. As such, white-collar professionals in Buenos Aires and other cities, like Salta, rely on it to increase their productivity and communicate with individuals outside of the country.
Brazil – 32%
Brazil is another country falling in love with ChatGPT. Over 32% of the population surveyed admit to using the tool.
The primary user base is the country’s massive student population. The tool provides resources for them to improve their English and tackle challenging concepts they might learn in lessons.
However, Brazilians are also leaning on ChatGPT because of its ability to facilitate remote work. Many rely on the tool to assist them with web design, data analysis, content creation, and video production.
Indonesia – 32%
Indonesia’s high usage statistics comes from the country’s young population, with a massive share of under 25s. These individuals are far more likely to use the tool for work and life, contributing to the country’s impressive figures, despite modest internet penetration in rural spots.
Furthermore, Indonesians are among the globe’s most active people on social media, with thousands of influencers and creators running business channels online. ChatGPT is a popular tool for these individuals because it can provide them with ideas and streamline their content creation processes.
South Africa – 31%
South Africa is the next largest user of ChatGPT, with 31% of respondents admitting that they use the platform. The high usage statistics has to do with the country’s young population and high internet penetration. Furthermore, South Africa is a multilingual society with eleven official languages, including English, Zulu, Afrikaans and Xhosa. These all require a tool that can translate between them, and ChatGPT can do the job.
Philippines – 28%
The Philippines has among the highest social media participation rates globally (because the country uses it as a platform for work and commerce). As such, 28% of people in the country use ChatGPT, often as a tool to help build their social accounts.
Other countries that use ChatGPT
Here’s a list of other countries that use ChatGPT a lot:
- Sweden – 27%
- South Korea – 26%
- Turkey – 23%
- U.S. – 23%
- Australia – 22%
- Mexico – 22%
- UK – 22%
- Japan – 19%
- China – 18%
- France – 18%
- Germany – 18%
- Saudi Arabia – 18%
- Thailand – 14%
Correlates Of ChatGPT Usage
The primary correlate of ChatGPT usage seems to be the age of the population. Countries with more people under 25, like India and Indonesia are more willing to embrace the technology.
Furthermore, more tech-savvy countries are also more likely to feature high on the list (similar to those using the best live chat solutions for websites). Again, that’s why India, Morocco and the UAE do so well.
There is also some evidence that usage statistics go up depending on how populations use ChatGPT. The more important the reason, the more likely they will use the tool. For example, in India and the Philippines, generative technology is vital for commerce. However, in places like Japan and the U.S., it is more used for fun and “dabbling.”
